"Free website hosting plans" is a type of web hosting service where you get free webspace on their hosting server to create and host your website free.
Free web page hosting has several advantages, but mainly that it costs nothing (no money and no credit cards needed).
Free website hosting services also often have several disadvantages (though a few actually surpass some of the cheapest paid hosting servers in some features), such as limited web hosting features and forced ads.
Usually, in exchange for these free hosting services, the free web hosting company places advertisements on your free web pages of some sort (banners, text links, pop-ups, etc.) to cover their costs and hopefully make a profit.
However, there are some free website hosts that provide free bannerless hosting (no ads, no pop-ups, and no advert of any kind), so they make money in other ways, such as displaying ads for the webmaster to click in their control panel, sending email ads, or requiring forum posting (which of course displays ads, as well as causing you to create free website content for them).
Other free web page hosts offer very limited services (such as limited web page space, bandwidth limit, and no scripting) to attract users and hope that many people upgrade to a paid web hosting service.
Many free website hosts provide a subdomain or sub-directory of their own domain name instead of (or an option to) allowing its users to host their own top-level domain name free.
Most of the free webpage hosting providers over the years have proven to often not be reliable servers, but most of the free hosts listed on this website have been in service for several years, so they are more reliable than most newer free hosts.
If you are running a website on a free host, you had better rethink your business plan. If you do not have ten or so dollars a month to pay for a reliable web host, then it would be much better to wait and save up the money.
Launching your business on such an unreliable service as "free hosting" would discredit your business and irritate your visitors. Some pitfalls of free hosting:
1. Pop-ups - Many "free" hosts will contain pop-up advertisements for their own site every time someone visits your site. Instead of people focusing on your product, they are immediately distracted by this ad!
2. Unreliable - Free hosting subscribers are at the bottom of the pecking order when it comes to customer support, bandwidth, and server resources.
3. Canceled - You may discover one morning that your website is not loading, only to find out later that your hosting service has been discontinued. Free hosts reserve the right to remove you at any time.
4. No Domain - Many free hosting services do not give you a unique domain. Visitors will have no domain name to associate with your site and will instead have to remember an unreasonably long URL, such as http://www.example.com/freeService/YourSite/index.html, which is simply horrendous.
