What type of web hosting to use?

Hi!

My name is Bikram. and i am newbie in hosting and not the brightest kind. I have a question regarding hosting and for that i am stating my requirements below.

I want to host 4 wordpress blogs

1 OS commerce or zencart website that might have 100 to 200 products. For payments i will sue any bank's payment gateway.

1 general website

i might host one forum as well.

all these services except my personal blog (biksy.com) will be new. My existing blog get around 100-200 visitors a day.

I am not sure, how much visitor to expect initially.

Please suggest me what type of hosting i should go for, shared, VPS or any other?

I read somewhere that if you get 5000 uniques then you should have X amount of bandwidth, can you please explain how to find out how much bandwidth will be required if i expect say 100 visitors.

And what does unique stands for, does repeat users doesn't count in this.

I am very confused and though to ask this question here, so that I can get expert's opinion on this.

Also suggest if anything more i need to look at before finalizing the hosting?

Thanks
Bikram

First, do not go with any provider that says "unlimited" that is a red flag, think of it this way. Servers have a finite amount of hard drive space then the server has a finite amount of resources to be able to serve xxx amount of clients.

No matter how big the server is or how much bandwidth the the machine is able to carry there is a point where the server's capability is tapped out and hosting providers will continue to put customers onto that server to squeeze every bit of performance out of it.

For your needs you want a company who offers professional web hosting and has a policy in place to not oversell / overload their servers for the sake of quality over quantity / profit.

Cheers!

Cheap and reliable don't always work out. Don't choose a host, just because there prices are cheap. Get a reliable good host from the start, even if it cost more. It will be well worth it in the long run.

Don't try free hosting!

for what you are asking you want to sell products online accepting credit card payments, for this you need an SSL Certificate and a Dedicated IP, a free host will NOT be able to provide this,

SSL Cert will cost around $20 per year
Dedicated IP will cost between $12-$24 per year

you should look for hosting offering 2-5GB space and 5-10GB bandwidth, you can always upgrade this later, pay around $5-10 per month if you are selling online you need a reliable service.

If you have any questions please let me know

If you see just good reviews about company, you can trust them too, because it could be written by one or two persons from same company. Don't you think so?

cheapest is usually not the best choice when it comes to hosting. If having a stable presence on the Internet is important to you, if you don't want to waste countless hours trying to resolve mysterious problems with your site, then do your research and be prepared to spend a few extra bucks to get a quality service run by a professional team.

A shared webhosting environment should be more than enough for what you need. However if you would like more control over how your site loads and what is enabled and disabled for security a VPS would suit you better. I would recommend a host with cPanel as it makes your life much simpler.

Hey there,

With so many web hosting services available today, we need to be careful in choosing the right web hosting company. I think you need these kinds of stuffs when choosing one:

- Unlimited space
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Unlimited domains

Bikram,

I think that you need 2- 5 GIG of disk space and 20-50 GIG of bandwidth on linux hosting.

Check linux plans of http://www.accuwebhosting.com/ ... they will fulfill your requirements.

As per my experience, VPS is the best option for your website.
